Season preview for the Phillies: 3 issues for the 2022 NL champions

Baseball has returned, according to CBS in Philadelphia. With their season opener against the Rangers on Thursday in Arlington, Texas, the Philadelphia Phillies begin their defense of the National League championship for 2022.

These are the three main issues the Phillies must address.

1. Is the biggest difficulty they have replacing Hoskins?

Last Thursday, when Rhys Hoskins' left knee gave out, a gaping hole was created in a Phillies lineup that already lacked two-time NL MVP Bryce Harper. Nevertheless, how the Phillies will replace Hoskins' bat isn't their biggest concern heading into this year.

Regardless of how unpopular Hoskins is with Phillies supporters, there will undoubtedly be a significant void to fill.

Replacing, give or take, 25 home runs a week from Opening Day is no simple chore. The Phillies' starting pitching depth, which is already being challenged, is their biggest concern. The Phillies anticipated that 19-year-old prospect Andrew Painter would serve as their fifth starter and provide depth behind Bailey Falter, Christopher Sanchez, Michael Plassmeyer, and Nick Nelson.

The depth is already becoming thinner as it progresses.

The valuable right elbow of Painter had a UCL injury, while Sanchez and Nelson are both hurt.

Ranger Suárez, who has inflammation in his left elbow, is a larger worry.

Although the Phillies claim it is not a catastrophic injury, Suárez won't be able to begin the season on time. Any injury to a pitcher's pitching arm is cause for concern.

Falter will serve as the fourth starter for the Phillies at the start of the season, and reliever Matt Strahm, who the team signed, will serve as the fifth.

In essence, the Phillies' season might end in disaster with just one more starting pitcher injury.

2. What Castellanos appear?

With much reduced expectations heading into Year 2 with the Phillies, Nick Castellanos is actually just as necessary as ever. That is a result of the Phillies losing Hoskins, their top right-handed power hitter.

Castellanos was more of a curiosity prior to Hoskins' injury and even with Harper out for at least two months. Due to the Phillies' addition of Trea Turner in the offseason, he wasn't as much in the public eye as he normally would have been.

The Phillies will now depend on Castellanos to recover without Hoskins.

If history is any indication, Castellanos will improve this year.

In Detroit, Castellanos had a rough first three seasons before he started to click. Cincinnati experienced the same situation. He seems to be a player who requires some time to adapt.

Although spring training statistics shouldn't be taken too seriously, Castellanos' figures this spring reveal something more than just his.240 batting average thanks to his 10 walks.

At Kevin Long's recommendation, Castellanos went closer to the plate during the spring. Also, he worked on his strategy, and the spring sample was promising in that regard.

With Hoskins sidelined, the Phillies will need Castellanos to perform similarly to how he has for the most of his career. The Phillies ought to be better positioned to cover for Hoskins' absence if Castellanos makes a full recovery.

3. Is the World Series a sure thing this year?

As unlikely as it may seem, three teams have returned to the Fall Classic the following season since the Phillies went to back-to-back World Series in 2008 and 2009, winning one and losing one.

Houston Astros pulled it off. Los Angeles Dodgers accomplished this. Texas Rangers carried it out.

Before winning the championship game against the Phillies last season, the Astros lost the World Series in 2021. In 2017 and 2018, the Dodgers suffered back-to-back World Series defeats, while the Rangers suffered a same fate in 2010 and 2011.

The Phillies are entering the 2023 season with high hopes and fresh enthusiasm, but oddsmakers still predict that they will finish third in the National League East.

The plot is well known. As the third wild-card team in 2022, the Phillies slipped into the postseason and rode a wave to the World Series. It is not necessary to win the division, but it would be good.

The Phillies only need to return to the postseason and anything is possible; they don't even need to win the NL East this year.

But is that sufficient? Was that season a success?

The road to the World Series in the National League is as difficult as they come, but Phillies supporters won't accept that. On paper, the league is superior to the American League.

Philadelphia will be up against teams like the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves, and New York Mets. It's impossible to rule out the Milwaukee Brewers, and anything can happen.

The Phillies' journey to the World Series last season surprised everyone, which is a key factor in how the team won over the city. Yet, they did, and it would be challenging to accept, say, a first-round defeat this year.

The protracted race starts on Thursday. In six months, we will assess our progress.

Cheers to baseball.
