Asa Hutchinson, a former governor of Arkansas, declared his intention to run for the Republican nomination for president. He stated that he thought that "people want leaders that appeal to the finest of America, and not simply play to our darkest inclinations."
Hutchinson is now part of a narrow Republican field that includes former president Donald Trump and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley thanks to his comments, which he made to ABC's This Week on Sunday. Others, such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, are anticipated to enter the race but have not yet done so.
A formal announcement will be made later this month in Bentonville, Arkansas, according to moderate Republican Hutchinson, who spoke to ABC.
The declaration was made a few days after the former governor of Arkansas spent several days in Iowa, the site of the first presidential primary, fueling rumors that he might declare his intention to run.
The announcement comes only two days before Trump is scheduled to turn himself in to New York police after being charged by a Manhattan grand jury for paying adult-film star Stormy Daniels hush money to conceal an alleged affair. Trump is the first resident of the White House to be charged with a crime. Afterwards, Hutchinson urged Trump to withdraw from the contest.
Contrary to what the rest of his party has said, he stated to ABC that "the grand jury determined probable cause and that's the threshold for any criminal charges in our country."
Due to term restrictions, Hutchinson, who presided over his state for two terms in a row, was unable to seek for office again in 2022. Former Trump spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders took his place as his successor.
Whether Hutchinson's campaign can gain traction in a party that is fully behind Trump is unknown. The most recent NPR/PBS News Hour/Marist survey released last week revealed that 8 in 10 Republicans support Trump and believe the investigations are a "witch hunt," and that 8 in 10 Republicans still think favorably of him.
